Transforming Healthcare for Sickle Cell Warriors
The Obi Ogbonnia Sickle Cell Foundation (OOSCF) is driven by a mission to provide free health insurance to under-18-year-old less-privileged individuals living with sickle cell disorder, ensuring equitable healthcare access and building a brighter future for those in need.
We are committed to creating a world where sickle cell disease is effectively managed, with no individual suffering unduly due to lack of access to care, awareness, or support. We recognise the fact that there is so much we can do as an organisation, and we are open to collaborations.

Our Story
The Birth of OOSCF
The idea to establish OOSCF was born in June 2022 during the 4th Global Congress on Sickle Cell Disease. For Obi Light Ogbonnia — a sickle cell warrior himself — the experience was deeply personal and profoundly enlightening.
Listening to scientific presentations and engaging with global discussions, it became clear: more voices were needed. A vision was born to amplify awareness, support warriors, and drive access to life-saving healthcare for those affected.
That vision became reality on March 24, 2024 — a triple celebration marking his 50th birthday, his inspirational book unveiling, and the official launch of OOSCF. At its heart: 50 less-privileged Nigerians in the FCT were awarded free health insurance coverage.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders where the red blood cells become misshapen — forming a crescent or "sickle" shape. These abnormal cells can block blood flow, causing severe pain, organ damage, and life-threatening complications. SCD affects millions worldwide, with Nigeria carrying the highest burden globally — an estimated 100,000 babies are born with SCD in Nigeria annually.
Our Health Insurance Premium program currently targets under-18-year-old, less-privileged Nigerians living with sickle cell disorder in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Eligibility is determined through a verified application process. We are working to expand coverage as funding grows. Contact us to begin the application process.
Every naira donated goes directly to our six active programs: Health Insurance Premiums, Food Assurance, Digital Literacy training, SelfCare Awareness workshops, Secret Santa community outreach, and The Painful Truth Podcast. We maintain full transparency with regular impact reports available on our Reports page. Administrative costs are kept minimal through volunteer contributions and CSR partnerships.
