About OOSCF

Transforming Healthcare for Sickle Cell Warriors

The Obi Ogbonnia Sickle Cell Foundation (OOSCF) is driven by a mission to provide free health insurance to under-18-year-old less-privileged individuals living with sickle cell disorder, ensuring equitable healthcare access and building a brighter future for those in need.

We are committed to creating a world where sickle cell disease is effectively managed, with no individual suffering unduly due to lack of access to care, awareness, or support. We recognise the fact that there is so much we can do as an organisation, and we are open to collaborations.

"Every warrior deserves a chance to thrive — together, we can rewrite their stories." — Obi Light Ogbonnia, Founder

Our Story

The Birth of OOSCF

The idea to establish OOSCF was born in June 2022 during the 4th Global Congress on Sickle Cell Disease. For Obi Light Ogbonnia — a sickle cell warrior himself — the experience was deeply personal and profoundly enlightening.

Listening to scientific presentations and engaging with global discussions, it became clear: more voices were needed. A vision was born to amplify awareness, support warriors, and drive access to life-saving healthcare for those affected.

That vision became reality on March 24, 2024 — a triple celebration marking his 50th birthday, his inspirational book unveiling, and the official launch of OOSCF. At its heart: 50 less-privileged Nigerians in the FCT were awarded free health insurance coverage.

"My pain birthed a purpose. Now, let our collective strength turn survival into triumph — because no one should fight alone." — Obi Light Ogbonnia

Our Vision

We envision a Nigeria free from the burden of sickle cell disease, where compassion and comprehensive care redefine the narrative of health and well-being for every citizen affected.

Purpose Statement

To reduce the burden of sickle cell disease through comprehensive care, advocacy, education, and research, while enhancing the quality of life for individuals and families affected by SCD.

Holistic support across healthcare, education, and community empowerment

Medical Insurance Coverage

We provide unwavering medical support to individuals affected by sickle cell disease, promoting education, awareness, and advocating for systemic changes that lead to a Sickle Cell-free Nigeria.

Medical Outreach & Screening

We conduct free or subsidised screening for sickle cell traits and offer genetic counselling to at-risk couples, families, and young intending couples at the early stage of their relationship.

Public Education Campaigns

We organise workshops, media campaigns, and community outreach programs to raise awareness about sickle cell disease — its causes, symptoms, prevention, and effective management strategies.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

Quality Education

OOSCF scholarships and our Digital Skills Literacy Program open doors to quality education and vocational training, ensuring warriors are never held back by their condition.

Gender Equality

We prioritise girls and women living with sickle cell disease, providing them equal access to healthcare, skills training, and economic empowerment opportunities.

Decent Work & Economic Growth

Our Digital Skills Literacy Program equips warriors with in-demand tech skills, enabling economic independence, remote work opportunities, and dignified livelihoods.

Reduced Inequalities

By targeting under-privileged sickle cell patients for free healthcare, OOSCF directly addresses health inequality — ensuring the most vulnerable are not left behind.

Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions

OOSCF advocates for transparent health policy reform and patient rights, engaging government bodies and institutions to embed sickle cell care in national health agendas.

Partnerships for the Goals

OOSCF's network of healthcare partners, CSR collaborators, and global alliances like the World Patients Alliance embodies the SDG 17 spirit of multi-stakeholder partnership.

Aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda
