SCD disproportionately affects people of African, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern descent. In the U.S., 1 in 365 Black newborns has SCD, compared to 1 in 16,300 Hispanic Americans9. Globally, over 8 million are affected, with Nigeria alone accounting for 150,000 annual births.
