Improving healthcare access for underserved sickle cell patients. Join us in transforming lives today.
In the heart of Nigeria, where the weight of stigma often outweighs the promise of potential, Obi Ogbonnia stands as a beacon of resilience. At 51, he has defied the odds as a sickle cell warrior in a nation where many with sickle cell disease (SCD) rarely survive past their teens. His journey—marked by pain, rejection, and unyielding courage—is a testament to the power of turning adversity into action.
Born into a world that misunderstood his condition, Obi’s childhood was shadowed by societal scorn. Labeled a “curse” by whispers in his community, he faced rejection at every turn. Relatives hid him during visits, friends’ parents forbade playdates, and schools hesitated to enroll him, fearing his crises would “disrupt” classrooms. Nights were haunted by agonizing pain crises, and days by isolation—yet Obi clung to hope. Today, Obi’s foundation transforms lives. Through free genetic counseling, emergency medical funds, and nationwide awareness campaigns, OOSCF has reached thousands.
At 19, after surviving a near-fatal crisis that left him hospitalized for weeks, Obi made a vow: No one should endure this alone. Years later, armed with unwavering resolve, he founded the Obi Ogbonnia Sickle Cell Foundation, a sanctuary for warriors like himself. The foundation’s mission? To dismantle stigma, provide life-saving care, and empower Nigeria’s SCD community.
“I refused to let my condition define my destiny,” he recalls……read more
In Nigeria, over 150,000 children are born with sickle cell disease (SCD) annually—a genetic condition that claims 70% of these young lives before their fifth birthday. Behind these numbers are families shattered by stigma, poverty, and preventable suffering. But there is hope. Today, we invite your organization to join this transformative journey through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)—a partnership where compassion meets impact, and purpose aligns with progress.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited blood disorders that profoundly alter the shape and function of red blood cells. Affecting millions globally, this condition is a stark example of how genetic mutations can disrupt lives while also driving groundbreaking medical advancements. SCD stems from a genetic mutation in the HBB gene, which produces hemoglobin—the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. This mutation causes hemoglobin to form rigid, crescent-shaped cells that obstruct blood flow, leading to tissue damage, pain, and severe complications. Here’s a closer look at its causes, challenges, and the evolving landscape of treatment.
