Improving healthcare access for underserved sickle cell patients. Join us in transforming lives today.
The Obi Ogbonnia Sickle Cell Foundation is driven by a mission to provide free health insurance to under-18-year-old less-privileged individuals living with sickle cell disorder, ensuring equitable healthcare access and building a brighter future for those in need.
We are committed to creating a world where Sickle cell disease is effectively managed, with no individual suffering unduly due to lack of access to care, awareness, or support. We recognise the fact that there’s so much we can do as an organisation, and we are open to collaborations.
“Every warrior deserves a chance to thrive,” together, we can rewrite their stories.”

Obi Light Ogbonnia
The idea to establish the Obi Ogbonnia Sickle Cell Foundation (OOSCF) was born in June 2022 during the 4th Global Congress on Sickle Cell Disease. For Obi Light Ogbonnia: a 51-year-old sickle cell warrior, the experience was deeply personal and profoundly enlightening. Listening to scientific paper presentations, engaging with poster sessions, and reflecting on the global discussions around the disease, it became clear: more voices were needed in the sickle cell advocacy space.
From that moment, a vision was born, to create a platform that would amplify awareness, support warriors, and drive access to life-saving healthcare for those affected. But the launch was not rushed. Obi patiently waited for the right moment, one that would blend purpose with personal meaning.
That moment came on March 24, 2024, a triple celebration marking his 50th birthday, the unveiling of his inspirational book, and the official launch of the Obi Ogbonnia Sickle Cell Foundation.
At the heart of the launch was a powerful act of service: 50 less privileged Nigerians living with sickle cell disorder in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were awarded free health insurance coverage, ensuring they would have access to the care they desperately need. This bold initiative reflects the foundation’s core belief, that everyone living with sickle cell deserves a chance at quality healthcare and a life of dignity.
The Obi Ogbonnia Sickle Cell Foundation is more than just an organization. It is a story of survival, a platform for change, and a growing community united by hope, advocacy, and action. Whether through awareness campaigns, policy engagement, or direct support to warriors and families, OOSCF is committed to making a lasting impact, one life at a time.
Obi Ogbonnia Sickle Cell Foundation is committed to providing unwavering medical support to individuals affected by sickle cell disease, promoting education and awareness, and advocating for systemic changes that lead to a Sickle Cell-free Nigeria.
We envision a Nigeria free from the burden of sickle cell disease, where compassion and comprehensive care redefine the narrative of health and well-being.
